MozPEL (Mozambique Principle Energy Limitada)

Agri-IQ are the appointed agricultural and sustainability partners for a 20,000ha sugar cane-to-ethanol and electricity co-generation project, initiated by the Geneva-based investment company Principle Capital, in Mozambique. Agri-IQ’s 20-year hands-on experience in strategising and developing projects stands them in good stead for the demands of such an undertaking.

MozPEL’s ethanol-from-sugarcane operation has been established in the Dombe region of Mozambique and is expected to begin ethanol production in 2014. It is anticipated that the project will produce 225 million litres of ethanol sustainably. The factory will also export up to 13MW of electrical power into the Mozambique national electricity grid. The Dombe project area spans a total area of 18,000ha of which approximately 14,000ha will be planted to sugar cane, with the remaining 4000 ha comprising fall out areas (streams, run off areas, existing homes and fields of local populace, factory and housing developments). It is expected that the area under commercial cane will be supplemented by a further 6000ha of cane produced by out growers and neighbouring small-scale farmers.

Aside from ensuring our own business operates with the smallest possible ecological footprint, AGRI-IQ’s greatest contribution to the MozPEL project is to develop their sustainability and ecological footprint in terms of world best practice. We choose to work with clients who share this philosophy and engage with suppliers who appreciate why this is so important.
